Over the course of 30 years of backpacking, youth hostelling and mountain expeditions I have learned the virtues of organizing my gear using a variety of stuff sacks, ditty bags and various sized pouches. The trick is to have all your stuff in easy to find packages without actually putting each item in its own individual container, which completely negates any organizational benefits and effectively doubles the weight and size of the load. Stuff sacks, the old stand by, hold a lot and are very light and compressible, but items inside them are only slightly easier to find than ones simply rattling around somewhere in the bottom of your pack. The 2-Sided Half Cube was a welcomed upgrade. As compressible and light as a stuff sack, it has two separate compartments with mesh covered, zippered doors. Ingeniously, one compartment was also entirely lined with a very thin, clear, waterproof layer. Any number of my smaller items could have been packed in the half cube, but I chose to use it to hold my socks, underwear, hat and gloves. At the beginning of the trip I used the two compartments for the obvious but less than critical purpose of keeping my socks and underwear separate. Later, I realized that the cube was much more useful when used to keep my clean socks and underwear (in the open mesh side) separate and safe from the dirty ones which I placed in the waterproof side. This also did a fine job of keeping their unpleasant odors from permeating the entire contents of my pack. Then, when I finally did manage to do some laundry I found another handy configuration. Items that were mostly dry were placed in the open mesh side where they could complete the drying process while the substantially wet items were placed in the sealed side where they wouldn't be at risk of dampening my camera equipment inside my pack.
